Serbia  Serbia's U17s Storm Back to Beat Slovenia in Their First World Cup Tune-Up
Serbia's under-17s opened their preparations for the FIBA U17 World Cup with a comfortable-looking 88-70 win over Slovenia, though the final score hid a wild swing in the middle of the game.
After a strong opening quarter that they took 22-16, Stevan Mijovic's side let Slovenia get loose in the second period, conceding a 32-9 burst that sent the Slovenians into the break with a 48-31 lead. The response, however, was emphatic. Serbia controlled the third quarter 27-18 to climb back within eight, then produced a remarkable closing stretch, outscoring Slovenia 30-4 in the fourth to pull away and win going away. Across the second half, Serbia outscored their opponents 57-22.
Stefan Lukic (2008) led the way with 20 points, six rebounds and four assists. Petar Bjelica (208-F/C-2009) added 16 points and eight rebounds, Lazar Milicic (196-F-2009) chipped in 12 and Nikola Djurovic (207-C-2009) 11. For Slovenia, Lun Jarc (203-F-2009) stood out with 19 points.
The two sides know each other well: Serbia arrive at this World Cup cycle as reigning FIBA U16 EuroBasket champions, having beaten Lithuania in last year's final, while Slovenia claimed bronze at that same event after losing to Serbia in the semifinals. Both nations punched their World Cup tickets through the 2025 U16 EuroBasket.
The teams meet again Saturday, June 6, in a second tune-up, also at Divcibare. From there the roads diverge: at the World Cup in Istanbul from June 27 to July 5, Serbia open in Group D against Australia, Venezuela and Cote d'Ivoire, while Slovenia land in Group C alongside New Zealand, Puerto Rico and hosts Turkiye.
