Day one of the FIBA U18 AmeriCup offered no suspense and plenty of statements. All four opening Group Phase games at the Domo de la Feria on June 1 ended in routs, with the tournament's traditional powers serving notice ahead of a competition that hands its top four finishers tickets to the 2027 FIBA U19 World Cup.
The United States, chasing an eighth straight continental title, opened with an 88-58 demolition of Argentina, leading wire to wire and outscoring their opponent in every quarter. The Americans pushed ahead by double digits in the first and led for 39 minutes and 21 seconds; Argentina never held an advantage.
Brazil were equally emphatic in Group A, burying Mexico 103-70 without ever trailing. Lucas Moro (195-F-2009) lit up the bench role with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting in just over 14 minutes, while Joao Neves (200-SF-2008) (17 points) and Isaiah Santos (190-SG-2008) (16 points, 9 rebounds) controlled the rest. A 13-0 third-quarter run broke the game open. Isaiah Barnes (201-G-2003) top-scored all night with 27 points for the hosts in defeat.
Canada produced the day's most lopsided result, overwhelming Venezuela 105-51 behind a complete all-around display from Maxime Meyer (216-C-2008), who stuffed the sheet with 13 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals and a block in 18 minutes. Lyris Robinson paced all scorers with 19 points on 4-of-5 from three, and Javion Tyndale (173-PG) added 15 points and 5 assists. An 18-0 fourth-quarter burst turned the rout into a statement.
The Dominican Republic completed the sweep of favorites, dispatching Puerto Rico 100-71. After Puerto Rico led briefly at 6-4, the Dominicans seized control with a three-pointer at the 6:31 mark of the first and never trailed again, stretching the margin to 22 by halftime.
